Single-Button Fishing

The entire fishing loop on one key. Cast, loot, re-buff, swap gear, and keep a full journal of every catch without touching your bags.

What it does

  • One-key loop: cast, interact, loot, with combat and self-heal fallbacks built in
  • Slot system for food, drink, bobbers, lures, pole enchants, chum, wards, and boats
  • Automatic buff upkeep: knows durations and never wastes a reapplication
  • Per-character and account-wide (Warband) profile scopes
  • Fish log: every catch recorded with zone and map position
  • Stats: all-time and per-session rollups, fish × zone breakdowns
  • Welcome screen sets up a new character in under a minute
  • Ultrafast looting (optional)

Getting started

  1. Download from your favorite addon manager or use our own Uplink software
  2. Open the welcome screen, bind your cast key, and go fish

Buff learning can no longer be fooled by combat.

The first bug report sent through the new in-game reporter (thank you, whoever you are!) uncovered a nasty one. When you enter or leave combat, the game briefly hides buff names, and SBF's buff learner could mistake a permanent equipment buff reappearing for the buff your chum fish just applied. Once that wrong learn stuck, the chum slot thought its buff was always up and simply stopped throwing fish, forever, with no error. Two fixes make this impossible now: the learner never compares buff snapshots across a combat change, and a thrown item can never learn a permanent buff at all (a real chum, food, or lure buff always has a timer; a buff with no timer is your gear talking). Both guards work on every item, including ones we have never seen.

Seven chum fish are now built in.

Five new fish joined the built-in catalog with verified buffs, so they work correctly on the first throw and can never mis-learn: Lynxfish, Gore Guppy, and Toxic Tlhapi (Skillful Chum), plus Arcane Wyrmfish and Spotted Killifish (Perceptive Chum). That covers the Coiled Isle catches alongside the Quel'Thalas ones from before. If your Toxic Tlhapi was stuck from the bug above, this release un-sticks it automatically.

    New: the zone buff glow.

When a special area blessing that boosts fishing is on your character, the edges of your screen now glow a soft green so you know you are standing somewhere worth fishing. It ships watching Cursed Land and Waters, the Coiled Isle blessing behind Captain Tokka's reputation arc (it appears after Turning Back the Surges). The first time it lights up, SBF tells you on screen what the glow means. It never blocks your mouse or covers the middle of the screen, and it can be turned off in Settings under Fishing behavior.

Bug reports got easier to read.

The catalog section of the in-game bug report now shows item names instead of bare ID numbers, and labels each line so it is obvious whether the entry involves a built-in item or one SBF learned on its own.

SBF now gets out of the way when you stop fishing.

New in Settings under Fishing behavior: an Idle timeout (30 seconds by default). When you stop fishing for that long, SBF stands down completely: all of its background key and buff monitoring stops, and the addon's CPU use drops to roughly 0% until you fish again. Your first cast press wakes everything back up, instantly. If you use gear profiles, your normal gear and audio come back at that same moment, exactly like before; the timeout now covers everyone, gear profiles or not. This is a performance release as much as a feature: parked in town, SBF now costs the same as an addon that is not running at all.

Looting cannot silently die anymore, in either mode.

SBF's looting rides the game's own interact key. If the client option "Enable interact key" (Options, Gameplay, Controls) is off, looting just quietly does nothing: no error, the key does not respond, and it looks like SBF is broken. Some of you found the accidental workaround of turning on two-button mode, which happened to flip that option back on. Now SBF keeps the option enabled itself whenever looting works through interact, in single-button AND two-button mode, and re-checks it on every cast so a mid-session change cannot strand you. If SBF has to turn it back on, it tells you in chat.

    Settings clarity.

    • "Get out of the way in combat" is now "Hide interface in combat", which says what it does.
    • The idle seconds field moved out of Profile advanced mode into Fishing behavior, since it is no longer a gear-only setting. The gear checkbox stays where it was and simply rides the shared timeout.
    • The labeled rows in Fishing behavior now match the size and alignment of the checkbox text around them.

    Thank you.

This release exists because players took the time to report what they were seeing: bayerithe99706, Murphieus, joesonline, and Delphinen all sent in issues that pointed us straight at the problems above. If we did this right, every one of them is fixed for you now.

Found something else? Want a say in what gets built next? Head to https://goblineng.co to report bugs and vote on upcoming features, or use the one-click bug report on the About tab (it builds a paste-ready blob, and it is exactly how these issues got found). The votes genuinely steer the roadmap.

Every edit in the options window sticks now.

Last release fixed the on/off switch writing to a dead copy of your settings after an automatic profile swap. This release fixes the same disconnect everywhere else on the row, because it turned out the switch was not the only victim:

    • Items you add, remove or reorder in a slot picker stay added, removed and reordered, including when a profile swap happens mid-session with the window open. Before this, an edit could look fine on screen, never reach the addon, and be gone after a reload.
    • The firing mode button and the buff-to-watch box write to your live profile the same way now.
    • Your selected items show their zone info again. The orange "not confirmed in this zone" tint, the list of zones an item has worked in, and the works-in-all-zones toggle were only appearing on items you had NOT picked. They now show on the items you actually fish with, which is where they matter.

Hiding items is reversible, like the tooltip always said.

    • Hiding a learned item from a picker used to also delete the record that would let "Show hidden items" bring it back, so the promised way back did not exist. It does now.
    • There is a "Restore all hidden" button in Settings next to "Show hidden items", for when you want everything back without clicking each one.
    • The item tooltip claimed shift-click did two different things. It does one thing: hide. The tooltip says so.

Boats: SBF will never cast a spell your character does not know.

If you share one profile across characters, the boat slot can hold Levitate, Path of Frost, Water Walking and Zen Flight side by side. Each character is supposed to use the ones it knows and skip the rest. One path through the code skipped that check and fired whatever was loaded, so a monk could sit there trying to cast a priest spell forever instead of using its own. Every cast now goes through the same "do you actually know this?" gate, on every character, in every mode.

    Non-English clients: the follow-through.

Last release made SBF work off English. This one finishes the corners we found while checking everything else:

    • A cast that misses fishable water is now detected on every language: the short back-off, the fail sound, and the log entry all fire. Off English these were silently doing nothing, so a whole class of cast results was missing from your Stats.
    • The Perception stat reads correctly instead of showing 0.
    • Pole enchant time-left reads correctly on Russian, Korean and Chinese clients. Before this the timer never matched, SBF thought the enchant was always expired, and it would burn roughly three lures per fishing cycle re-applying one that was fine.

    Small but real.

    • Building a status report, or having a Haul bar show SBF's next action, no longer nudges the addon itself. Reading is reading now; before, just drawing a bar could quietly consume a chum burst or start a boat sequence.
    • A cast you reeled in normally could occasionally be logged as "nothing happened" because the key watcher blinked at the wrong instant. It waits for real evidence now.
    • Status reports now include the combat and heal slots, which were missing entirely.
    • Pressing Backspace in the bug report window no longer erases the report you were about to copy.
  • 2026.09.01.12026-09-01

If you do not play in English, this is the release that makes SBF work.

Huge thanks to Fisu, who found and reported both of the bugs below with the exact cause already tracked down. They had been in SBF since the beginning, and they were invisible to us because everything works fine on an English client. That is a rough way to meet an addon, and the report was better than most bug reports we write ourselves.

    • The fishing key now casts on every language. The built-in "Cast Fishing" action was hard-coded to the English spell name. On a German, French, Spanish or any other non-English client that name does not exist, and a macro pointing at a spell that does not exist fails without saying anything. So a fresh install did nothing at all when you pressed the key. SBF now looks the spell up properly, in whatever your client calls it.
    • Catches, casts and stats are recorded again. SBF worked out whether you were fishing by checking the spell name and one specific spell ID. Neither matched on Fisu's client, so SBF never noticed the fishing line was out. Fishing worked, fish were caught, and the Stats tab sat at zero. It now recognizes the cast by reading your own fishing spellbook instead of assuming.
    • Fighting back works on every language too. The built-in combat action had the same problem as the fishing key: it named the assist spell in English, so on any other client it quietly cast nothing while SBF carried on as if it had. If you fish somewhere things attack you, this is the one you will notice.
    • Food, drink and boat buffs are tracked correctly on non-English clients too. Same root cause in two more places, found while checking whether anything else made the same assumption.

If you reported odd behavior before and gave up, please try again.

Slots that are switched off now stay off.

    • Turning a slot off works, and keeps working. Two separate faults could let a slot you had switched off keep firing. One left the slot's own key connected. The other could quietly disconnect the options window from your live profile after an automatic profile swap, so the switch you flipped was writing somewhere nothing read. The window agreed with you while the addon carried on regardless.
    • Edits stick. The same disconnect could throw away a change you had just made, with no error and nothing to see.

    The loot key.

    • Fixed a loot key that stopped working after an update. A one-time upgrade step could remove your loot key binding while moving it, leaving you with nothing bound and no message about it. It now checks the move succeeded before removing anything, and tells you at login if no key can reach Interact.
    • Fixed two other ways the loot key could go dead and never recover on its own, including one that could freeze it for the rest of the session.

Chum, and items the game has changed.

    • The Midnight chums are corrected. Blizzard removed the use effect from Shimmer Spinefish, Tender Lumifin and Hollow Grouper. SBF was still treating them as chum, reporting them as thrown while nothing happened. They are out, and Sin'dorei Swarmer and Root Crab now track the right buffs.
    • An item that can no longer be used is skipped instead of being thrown over and over, so one dead item cannot stall your rotation.
    • Hide items you never want offered. Shift and left-click any item in a slot picker to hide it. Turn on "Show hidden items" in Settings to bring them back.

New: telling us when something goes wrong.

    • Report a bug. There is a button at the top of the About page. It opens a window with a summary of your setup that you can copy straight into a report: versions, settings, what is in each slot and which item would fire next, and anything that went wrong during the session. It contains no character name, realm or guild.
    • On a non-English client it also includes your language and fishing spell details, so the next report like Fisu's can be answered without a round of questions.

New: the AddOns button and the minimap.

    • SBF now appears in the game's AddOns menu on the minimap, where it should have been all along. Haul, Megaphone, Gadgets and Coffer are in there now too.
    • You can hide the minimap button. Settings, Minimap, "Hide the minimap button". You can still open SBF with /sbf or from the AddOns menu, and right-clicking SBF there puts the button back.
  • 2026.08.17.22026-08-18

Updated for World of Warcraft 12.1, Curse of Ula'tek.

Patch 12.1 changed the rules for how addons read your buffs, and SBF's buff checks hadn't caught up. The result was a stream of Lua errors any time the game hides buff information.

    • Fixed the error spam. SBF now steps back cleanly when the game hides buff data instead of throwing an error at you several times a second.
    • Fixed the fishing-perception readout, which hit the same wall and could surface the error through Haul's perception field as well.
    • Marked compatible with 12.1, so the client stops flagging SBF as out of date.

    Fishing itself is unchanged.

  • 2026.08.04.82026-08-05

A lot of bug fixes in this one. Most of them only bite in specific situations, so you may never have hit them, but if you did they were annoying. There are some quality of life improvements in here too, mostly around the fishing log telling you what actually happened.

    Better cast outcome tracking

Casts used to fall into "interrupt" or "unknown" far more often than they should have, which made those counts fairly useless. Outcomes are now sorted properly, so the log tells you exactly what happened on every cast.

    • Added NOTHING. You reeled properly and on time, the line just came up empty. That used to land in interrupt/unknown along with everything else.
    • Pressing Escape now registers as an escape. It also used to show up as interrupt/unknown, which is why that number was never worth much.
    • Improved catch logging. A catch is captured the moment the loot window opens, so recasting quickly no longer loses it.
    • Improved chest logging. The Patiently Rewarded Chest and the Grandline Chest are tracked by their own IDs and register in the log properly, including when your bags are full and the loot window has to reopen.
    • Improved loot kind detection generally, so what lands in the log is what actually happened.

Fixed: non fishing loot logged as gathered

Loot that had nothing to do with fishing, herb nodes, mining and chests you opened on your own, was being logged as gathered in the fishing journal. It skewed catch rates and it was never meant to be there. Corrected.

    Fixed: windows locked during combat

The Welcome screen and the configuration windows could get stuck while you were in combat, and you could not close or move them. They now get out of your way on their own when combat starts and come back when it ends. It is a setting, so you can have them collapse, hide completely, or stay put if you would rather they did not move.

    Improved buff handling

Buffs could get cross identified between items, so one item would end up watching another item's buff and the rotation would act on the wrong thing. Items now hold onto their own buff identity and cannot take one from a neighbor.

Fixed: gear switching on its own

In a specific set of circumstances your gear would swap itself back to fishing gear when it should have left it alone. Fixed.

Fixed: controller support turning itself off

A controller setting was being changed when it should not have been. This should also make SBF behave better alongside other controller addons.

Skill numbers fill themselves in now

The game does not hand an addon your per expansion fishing skill until you have opened the Fishing Journal yourself at least once. Until that happens SBF has nothing to read, so the skill numbers sit there empty and it looks broken.

Refresh skill on cast takes care of it. The first time you press your fishing key in a session, SBF flashes the journal open and shut, grabs the numbers and carries on casting. You see a blink and nothing else. It only does this once per session, only when the data is actually missing, and never in combat.

It is on by default and you can turn it off from either the Settings page or the Skill Book page, whichever one you happen to be looking at.

    Polish

    • Tooltips follow your cursor and read the same everywhere.
    • A simpler Welcome screen.
    • The Stats page no longer shows empty boxes where a character should be. A couple of symbols were outside the range the game font covers.
    • Help text pointed at a few slash commands that do not exist. Those are gone, and the sound folder note now tells you where the setting actually lives.
    • The Combat slot describes what it really does. It casts Single-Button Assistant at whatever you are already fighting, and picking up the nearest enemy is opt in.
    • The idle gear restore help said the feature was off by default. It is on.
    • SBF now shows up as "Single-Button Fishing" in your addon list instead of "SBF".

Happy fishing, and may every cast come up worth something.

Shared data-library update (GECStore 27). Session records now exclude anything that happens inside a pause window from session totals — keeping SBF's records in lockstep with Haul and the website. No SBF-specific behavior changes.

Session time stays accurate on a messy exit. If you logged out — or the game closed — while your fishing session was paused, the pause could be left hanging and skew that session's recorded time. Sessions now seal the pause the moment they close, so time fished is always right, even across a crash.
